The 2nd Oxford & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry battalion were part of 5 Brigade, 2nd Division that had arrived in France in August 1914 and since then had been engaged in the Retreat from Mons and the Battle of the Aisne.

At some stage James Ballott was wounded and evacuated to the coast at St. Nazaire where he died on 29th September, 1914. As yet there is no information as to where and when he was wounded.
